I’m originally from Honolulu. I grew up fairly poor — and as a teenager, after the 2008 recession, we became extremely poor. There were days where I couldn’t eat.
My family is financially illiterate. My parents did not make good financial decisions. I did not grow up financially educated at all. I had major trust issues with the system, the government, and rich people in general. We were taught that rich people were greedy and evil, and that there is no ethical way to make money or save for retirement.
That is all false. And I want to help other poor people realize that you can make money, save money, and still sleep at night.
In 2019, my mom died with no life insurance. My siblings and I ruined our finances to get her cremated and take care of her affairs. I’m still financially recovering.
